1st Century AD:
A Greek scholar known as Heron of Alexandria invented the first recorded automatic door during the Roman era in Egypt in the
first century AD. He created a door opener that opened a set of temple doors using heat and pneumatics.
17th Century:
During the reign of Emperor Yang of Sui, who reigned from 604 to 618, the Chinese invented the first foot-sensor-activated door
in the 17th century (he had one installed to his royal library).
1931:
Horace H. Raymond and Sheldon S. Roby, two engineers, created the first model of a device that triggered the opening of an
automatic door in 1931. The invention was patented and put into service in a restaurant.
1954:
Dee Horton and Lew Hewitt invented the first sliding automatic door in 1954. A mat actuator was used to open the door. They co-
founded Horton Automatics Inc in 1960 and introduced the automatic sliding door to the market.
1970:
In the 1970s, motion sensors were developed and used to activate the opening of automatic doors. This sparked a surge in
popularity, with automatic doors assisting in providing disabled access and large-scale building openings using contactless
technology.
